KARACHI: At least 34 people were killed while 80 others sustained injuries as a severe earthquake jolted parts of the country including urban centres Karachi, Hyderabad, Quetta, Abbottabad, Islamabad and Lahore, Geo News reported.
According to reports 34 people have been killed in Mashkel in Balochistan while 1,000 homes have been destroyed.
A local hospital official said houses in the area caved in, resulting in the death and injuries of residents.
Mashkel is around 600 kilometres southwest of Quetta, the main town of Balochistan province, which borders Iran's Sistan-Baluchestan province.
Tremors were felt across Pakistan, India, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and other areas. The Met Office said that the intensity of the quake was recorded at 7.8 while the origin was Pakistan-Iran border area.
United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the tremor hit at 10:44 GMT at a depth of 15.2 km. The epicenter was in southeast Iran.
It was located 201 km (125 miles) southeast of the Iranian city of Zahedan and 250 km northwest of Turbat in Pakistan.
People also evacuated shaking buildings in Qatar and Dubai, residents said.
Pakistan Army have begun relief activities in earthquake-hit areas, Inter-Services Public Relation (ISPR) said.
According to the ISPR, helicopters medical staff medicines tents and other goods have been dispatched to the affected areas in Balochistan.
It said that 62 wings of Frontier Corps have been directed to leave for quake-hit areas.
