Hundreds of people attended a 'party' in central London celebrating Baroness Thatcher's death, after football fans voiced their anger at the former prime minister.

Protesters in Trafalgar Square brought sparklers and party-poppers to the rain-soaked event, while others drank champagne.

Those present also chanted slogans about Lady Thatcher, who died at The Ritz on Monday.

Members of the National Union of Mineworkers travelled to the capital from North East England, with others joining them from Scotland and Wales.

UK Uncut members, protesting about welfare cuts, also joined the demonstration.

There was a large police-presence at the event, with reports of minor scuffles between a handful of protesters and officers.

Among the crowds in Trafalgar Square was four-year-old Jack, who was stomping around shouting "Thatcher's dead, Thatcher's dead."

His father Howard Garrick, from Islington, north London, said he was determined his son should come to the party.

"This is about his future as well, not just the past," he said.

"He needs a grounding in life and to understand how we are not going to be made into wage slaves."

It comes after Lady Thatcher's death was celebrated by Liverpool football club supporters, with a number of large banners and chants during their side's game at Reading.

Reading chairman John Madejski had previously called for a minute's silence at the Premier League match in memory of the former prime minister, but the planned tribute was turned down by officials.

Instead, there was a silence to mark the 24th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, which killed 96 fans in 1989.

Before the match fans also joined in chants against the former leader, whose role in the official response to the tragedy is still a source of anger for many.

The Hillsborough Independent Panel report, published last autumn, revealed Lady Thatcher's reluctance to endorse criticism of the police despite the government being aware of "damning" evidence of their role.

Monday will mark the first anniversary since an independent inquiry revealed the extent of a cover-up by South Yorkshire police that sought to blame Liverpool fans for the deaths.
